Algebraic Geometry Working Seminar

Organizational Meeting for the Algebraic Geometry Working Seminar

This meeting will be to set up the Algebraic Geometry Working Seminar for summer '23. If you are unavailable please let us know what times for the seminar would work for you using this poll https://forms.gle/rmyALT5pJiKkjyet9.

Please reach Robert Harris or Yash Singh (the organizers) for any questions.

MC 5417

Thursday, May 11, 2023 9:00 am - 9:00 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

PhD Thesis Defence

Jacob Campbell, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

Reading Seminar on Hartshorne

Robert Cornea, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Sheaves"

We will be starting next week with the first section on chapter 2 of Algebraic Geometry by Robin Hartshorne. There will be an overview talk on sheaves and then if time permits, tackle some problems on sheaves in Hartshorne.

Chiral de Rham Seminar

Ben Webster, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Vertex algebras, arcs and loops"

I'll talk about vertex algebras, with an eye to how they arise in algebraic geometry through arc and loop spaces.

Tuesday, May 16, 2023 12:30 pm - 12:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Operator Algebras Learning Seminar

Thomas Bray, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Boundaries and C*-simplicity of (discrete) groups 2"

I will continue to discuss the contents of the paper “Boundaries of reduced C*-algebras of discrete groups" by Kalantar and Kennedy.

MC 5479

Wednesday, May 17, 2023 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Hadamard Learning Seminar

Nick Priebe, University of Waterloo

"Introduction to Hadamard matrices and their quantum symmetries"

Continuing last Thursday's talk, we will introduce the Banica-Nicoara quantum symmetry groups of Hadamard matrices. These provide some interesting quantum groups, and in some sense capture some symmetries associated with the matrix.
