Ring Theory Seminar

Blake Madill, Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"The Fundamental Theorem of Hopf Modules"

We continue our investigation of Hopf modules.

Friday, November 4, 2016 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Geometry & Topology Seminar

Sachin Gautam, Columbia University

“Elliptic quantum groups”

In 1995 G. Felder introduced an elliptic Rmatrix, which satisfies a dynamical version of the YangBaxter equation. The elliptic quantum group of sl(n) is then defined in the same vein as the usual Rmatrices give rise to quantum groups via the RTT formalism of Faddeev, Reshetikhin and Takhtajan.

Model Theory Learning Seminar

Samuel Kim, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Continuous model theory III”

Vaught is a student of Tarski. Many of the early results follow from him. We will see one.

Algebraic Geometry Learning Seminar

Anton Mosunov, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

will speak on

In this talk, I will end up our discussion about sheaves on a base by proving how one can glue sheaves. I will then introduce the definition of a scheme, show several motivating examples, and discuss the notion of a spectrum of a ring in the context of schemes.

MC 5413

Thursday, November 10, 2016 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Number Theory Seminar

Akshaa Vatwani, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Twin primes and the parity problem ”

We relate the twin prime problem to conjectures of Chowla type regarding the Mobius and Liouville functions. This is joint work with Professor Ram Murty.

MC 5479

Thursday, November 10, 2016 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Topas Theory Learning Seminar

Edward Lee, University of Waterloo

“Topos Theory V”

We continue chapter 6 of Goldblatt; having developed classical propositional logic and Boolean algebras, we now turn to generalizing logical connectives and semantics to arbitrary topoi.

Geometric Analysis Working Seminar

Jonathan Herman, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Existence and Uniqueness of Moment Maps”

Given a symplectic manifold, we will study under which conditions a Lie group action is guaranteed to admit a moment map. To do this, we will look at Lie algebra cohomology and in particular the Whitehead lemmas.
