Kirby Calculus Seminar

Michael Albanese, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Handles"

We introduce handles as the fundamental building blocks of manifolds and begin to discuss the notion of a handle decomposition. The discussion will apply to all dimensions.

Thursday, September 14, 2023 4:30 pm - 4:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Analysis Seminar

Sergio Giron Pacheco, University of Oxford

Tensor category equivariant Z-stability

In this talk I will discuss D-stability for strongly self absorbing C*-algebras D and its relevance for the classification of C*-algebras. I will then discuss an equivariant notion of D-stability with respect to an action of a tensor category and an adaptation of a classical result of Kirchberg to this setting.

This seminar will be held both online and in person:

"A special class of harmonic map submersions with calibrated fibres"

Say we have a conformally horizontal submersion between two Riemannian manifolds of dimensions n and k respectively. If the domain admits a closed (n-k)-calibration form, then we can define a special type of maps which we call conformally calibrated (or Smith) maps. We will show that these maps are k-harmonic and we will see a couple of examples.

Kirby Calculus Seminar

William Gollinger, University of Waterloo

"Handles II"

This week we continue the discussion of handles, moving on to handle decompositions of smooth manifolds. We briefly describe how Morse Theory ensures the existence of handle decompositions, and give some particular examples. We discuss in some detail the notions of dual decompositions, handle cancellations, and handle slides.

Intersection Theory Learning Seminar

Organizational Meeting

We will discuss/determine the time this seminar will be held this term as well as determine the first set of speakers. This seminar will follow a portion of the book "3264 and all that: the second course in algebraic geometry" by Eisenbud and Harris. A co-organizer (Changho) will also give a brief teaser of the seminar, as well as explain how to read the book (and prepare the talks).
