Matthew Harrison-Trainor will be taking up an NSERC Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at Waterloo in the fall.  He will be working with Pure Mathematics Professor Barbara Csima.  Harrison-Trainor was an undergraduate student at Waterloo and is currently completing his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. Congratulations to Pure Mathematics Professor and Mathematics Faculty Teaching Fellow, Brian Forrest, for winning the Fields Institute Margaret Sinclair Memorial Award. This award recognizes an educator in Canada who has demonstrated innovation and excellence in mathematics education at any level. Brian was cited for his outstanding teaching at all levels, curricular development, and creation of the Masters of Mathematics for Teachers program. Earlier in the year, Brian was also awarded the MAA Seaway Section's Clarence F. Stephens Distinguished Teaching Award.

Professor David McKinnon of the Pure Mathematics Department was one of four university faculty members to be awarded the University of Waterloo Distinguished Teaching Award for 2016-17. David is an amazing teacher, who receives glowing evaluations from his students in every course he teaches, from first year through the graduate program. Congratulations, David!

Congratulations to Pure Mathematics Professor Brian Forrest for winning the Mathematical Association of America Seaway Section's Clarence F. Stephens Distinguished Teaching Award. Brian was recognized for his outstanding teaching, both in the classroom and on-line, and for his vision and implementation of the highly successful UW Masters of Mathematics for Teaching program. He will receive this award at the spring conference of the Seaway Section and will be their nominee for the MAA Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics.

Congratulations goes to Stanley Xiao for winning the Mathematics Faculty Murray Martin prize for best paper by a graduate student. Stanley was a PhD student of Professor Cam Stewart in the Pure Mathematics Department. He graduated in the summer and now holds an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford.

Congratulations to Pure Mathematics Professor Matthew Kennedy for winning the BlueHat Prize at the 2016 Australian Mathematical Society annual meeting. Matt was also the Early Career Lecturer at the meeting. The BlueHat Prize is awarded by students to the best non-student speaker at the meeting.

The CTE has published its latest Teaching Story profiling Brian Forrest, Professor of Pure Mathematics, who aligns learning outcomes, assessment, and instruction in his online and on-campus courses.
