Congratulations to Jason Bell for his appointment as a University Research Chair. Established in 2003, the University Research Chair program "recognizes exceptional achievement and pre-eminence in a particular field of knowledge." Please see the Provost's website for more information on the program as well as current and past holders of University Research Chairs.

On Friday, June 14, 2013, Ken Davidson received the Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision at the morning convocation ceremony. The award was established by the Graduate Studies Office in collaboration with the Graduate Student Association to recognize exemplary faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in graduate student supervision. Congratulations, Ken!

Yu-Ru Liu wins teaching award

Congratulations goes out to Yu-Ru Liu for winning the 2013 Faculty of Mathematics Award for Distinction in Teaching. Yu-Ru's accomplishment will be recognized at the Fall Faculty Banquet.

The other recipient of this year's award also has a tie to Pure Mathematics – Dan Wolczuk completed his MMath degree in Pure Mathematics in 2003. Congratulations to both Yu-Ru and Dan!

Matthew Harrison-Trainor (BMath 2012) has won the first Faculty of Mathematics' Jessie W.H. Zou Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research. He will receive the award at the morning convocation on June 15, 2012.

Matthew Kennedy (PhD, 2011) has won the 2012 CMS Doctoral Prize. He will give a talk, and receive the award, in December at the CMS meeting in Montreal. Matt joins other University of Waterloo alumni as winners of this award: Jim Geelen (C&O) in 1997, Stephen Astels (PM) in 2000, Nico Spronk (PM) in 2004, Michael Newman (C&O) in 2006, and also David Kerr (PM undergrad, Toronto PhD) in 2002.
