Giving Back, Moving Forward: the Power of Volunteerism in Retirement

Many hands held up to volunteer.

Retirement is not just a time to step back—it’s an opportunity to step forward. Volunteering as a retiree offers a powerful way to stay active, engaged, and purposeful, transforming one's golden years into a time of meaningful contribution. By sharing their wealth of experience and skills, retirees can make a tangible impact on their communities while forging new social connections, combating isolation, and maintaining a deep sense of fulfillment. Beyond giving back, volunteerism fosters lifelong learning, personal growth, and vitality, proving that retirement is not an endpoint but a new chapter rich with purpose.

Giving Back, Moving Forward: Volunteerism in Retirement

Join us for this UWRA presentation, where four individuals will share their personal experiences and insights into the profound impact of volunteerism—on themselves, the organizations they serve, and society at large.

Meet Our Panelists:

  • Dr. Bryan Smale, Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo & Director, Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW)
Bryan will highlight research findings demonstrating how volunteerism significantly enhances overall well-being and quality of life.
  • Jane Hennig, Executive Director, Volunteer Waterloo Region
A passionate advocate for volunteerism, Jane will discuss the community's need for volunteers and the benefits they bring. Jane also serves on the boards of Volunteer Canada and the Ontario Volunteer Centre Network.
  • Wayne Johnson, Retiree
Drawing from his personal experience, Wayne will share insights into his international volunteer work in developing countries and its lasting impact.
  • Susan Neeb, Retiree
Susan’s commitment to volunteerism began at age eight with a small fundraising event and has only grown since. Today, she remains active with ZONTA, Grandmothers to Grandmothers, and as a committee chair/member in her local condominium.

This session promises to be engaging and inspiring, offering valuable perspectives for anyone considering how to make the most of their retirement through meaningful service.

We look forward to seeing you there!
