Cory Schmidt (BES ’21) is bridging mining and environmental sustainability

Tuesday, March 15, 2022

Cory Schmidt graduated from the Environment and Business program at the University of Waterloo in 2021 with dual minors in Economics and Geography & Environmental Management.

After graduation, Cory took the position of Environmental Management Intern at a shipyard in Victoria, BC, assisting in addressing and reducing the company’s environmental risk. This position provided him with experience working in the environmental field which he discovered he really enjoyed.

From Victoria, he moved to Calgary for his next job. Cory is the Environmental Coordinator at Alexco Resource Corporation. Alexco is the owner and operator of the historic Keno Hill Silver District in Canada's Yukon Territory, one of the highest-grade silver deposits in the world. His current role, Environmental Coordinator at Alexco Resource Corporation, allows him to work 14 days on site in the Yukon, and 14 days in his Calgary office. This current position provides a broad range of responsibilities including field inspections with regulatory agencies, coordinating environmental projects, mitigating the companies’ environmental risks, delivering environmental related training to site personnel, and more.

Cory is fortunate enough to be able to use what he learned during his undergraduate degree to further Alexco Resource Corporation’s environmental objectives. And his position at Alexco has taught him alot about the mining and environmental fields.
