Will the world be able to feed an extra 2 billion people in the next 20 years? To examine challenges presented by a growing demand for meat-rich diets in developing countries in light of the gross inefficiencies of animal protein production, The Agenda with Steve Paikin invited School of Environment, Enterprise and Development professor Goretty Dias, along with four other experts for The Future of Protein; Farming to Feed the World.
In the interview, Professor Dias emphasized the need to said in order to reverse some of the environmental damage caused by modern agriculture and provide a stable and sustainable global food system, the current proportion of animal to plant-based protein, which is currently 80:20, would almost have to be inverted. A diet of 50-70% vegetable based protein, she said, would help keep agriculture from pushing planetary boundaries.
