International Development alumni Stefan Chang (BES 2018) is currently living in Kangirsuk, an Inuit community on the Ungava Bay side of Nunavik, Quebec. He is working as a math teacher for Frontier College and a tutor for the Kativik Ilisarniliriniq School Board.

Throughout the INDEV program, Stefan said he was encouraged to think critically and take an intersectional approach towards topics that were often described as “multi-dimensional and complex.” Stefan, who chose to do the research stream in the program, wrote a thesis examining the mental health outcomes of Indigenous youth in Canada. Little did he know that just one year later, mental health would be at the centre of his efforts as an educator in a remote community.

Now, three years after graduating, Stefan has found himself reminding his students that, while he might be a teacher in the classroom, they have become his teachers; teaching him about Inuit history and encouraging him to participate in cultural activities.
