A University of Waterloo student is the recipient of a prestigious Trudeau Foundation scholarship for her work on the future of Arctic governance.

Tahnee Prior, a global governance PhD student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, hopes to define a new governance framework that will address the emerging and complex issues caused by climate change, resource extraction, migration and potential inter-state conflict in the Arctic.

As a result of being on the front lines of the costly impacts of climate change, the property and casualty (P&C) insurance sector in Canada is leading efforts to help de-risk the country from the growing impacts of wild weather.

A study released today assesses the level of preparedness of 15 major Canadian cities to limit flood damage. Commissioned by The Co-operators and written by Dr. Blair Feltmate from the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, the report aims to motivate cities to increase efforts to build resilience against flooding, and to provide a benchmark against which their progress can be measured. 

Ian Pinnell and International Development Student in his final year of study won a fellowship worth $20,000. The fellowship at MaRS Discovery District in Toronto will last eight months

The fellowship, named Studio [Y], focuses on social innovation. Pinnell was selected largely for his work with the National Youth Council of Malawi on his World University Service of Canada (WUSC) field placement.

Olaf Weber has joined The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) as a senior fellow this March.

The Waterloo Environment and Business Society held its first environmental discussion panel on Canada’s sustainable development outlook this week. The event, graciously co-hosted by SEED, was >meant to mobilize students to actively pursue sustainable development. It was a wonderful success with over 140 students and community members attending at St. Paul's College.

Chilika lagoon is the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia situated along the east coast of India in the state of Odisha. More than 400,000 fishers, belonging to specific fisher castes, customarily depend upon the lagoon for their livelihood. As a Sustainability Management Program Master’s student at the University of Waterloo and as a part of my Master’s research thesis, I got the opportunity to do a Village level study in Chilika Lagoon.
