Dr. Adwoa Appiah is an Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream) at the University of Waterloo’s School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED). Her work focuses on sustainable finance, ESG integration, and the role of financial institutions in advancing sustainable development.
Prior to joining academia, Dr. Appiah worked in commercial banking and development finance across sub-Saharan Africa. At Ecobank, she worked with institutional clients, including financial institutions, development partners, NGOs, and diplomatic missions across multiple markets, contributing to cash management and digital finance initiatives, including projects related to renewable energy and digital payments. Earlier in her career, she worked with the African Development Bank on environmental safeguards and sustainability initiatives.
Dr. Appiah holds a PhD in Sustainability Management from the University of Waterloo, an MSc in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford, an Executive MBA in Finance from the University of Ghana Business School, and a BSc in Land Economy from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. She has also completed the Certificate in University Teaching at the University of Waterloo. Her teaching emphasizes applied learning that connects financial decision-making and management practices to real-world sustainability challenges.
