The St. George’s University + University of Waterloo Five- and Six-Year Doctor of Medicine Tracks offer a direct and globally respected path to a medical degree.
Students earn a Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSci) from the University of Waterloo and an MD from SGU.

Admission Requirements
The admission requirements listed below are intended as general guidelines to illustrate the typical academic background and credentials considered for each track. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance, nor are they exhaustive of all possible pathways to admission. Final decisions, including track placement, are made by the SGU Student Faculty Selection Committee based on a comprehensive review of each applicant’s academic history, personal attributes, and overall preparedness.
5-Year MD Track
- University/College: 30-60 university/college credits (1.5+ years of post-secondary study) with all medical school prerequisites met
- Advanced Levels: Minimum 3 subjects with A’s and B’s in Biology, Chemistry, and either Math or Physics; Math or Physics can be accepted at AS level with strong non-science third A level.
- Full IB Diploma: Requires a minimum score of 32 points; 3 Higher Level science subjects recommended; minimum of 2 Higher Level subjects required, which must include Chemistry and Biology; results 5 or higher.
- CEGEP Diploma: 3 GPA overall and in relevant sciences
6-Year MD Track
- University/College: 30-60 university/college credits (1.5+ years of post-secondary study) with some medical school prerequisites met

- Secondary school diploma
Required Coursework
Applicants must have successfully completed the following Grade 12 (or equivalent) courses:
- Two (2) Grade 12 science courses, selected from:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Earth and Space Science
- One (1) Grade 12 Mathematics course
- One (1) Grade 12 English course
Recommended Preparation
To be considered competitive, applicants are strongly encouraged to have:
- Completion of Grade 12 Biology and Grade 12 Chemistry
- A competitive overall GPA of approximately 90% or higher
Admission Notes
- Current Waterloo students must apply through SGU to transfer into the program
- Years One and Two are completed at the University of Waterloo.
- Years Three and Four are completed at the St. George's University, School of Medicine, Grenada.
- SGU technical requirements.
- SGU policies, regulations, and procedures, which must be followed for studies at SGU.
- Students are advised that SGU is located in a different country, subject to different laws and regulations. UW policies may not apply when at SGU.
Students wishing to earn their Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree from Waterloo must complete:
- All required courses (or equivalent) for the Medical Sciences program and
- At least two years of academic work (equivalent to 10.0 academic units) at Waterloo.
We may request official documents to ensure you’ve met the requirements for the Medical Sciences degree.
Students completing the five-year path (with only one year at Waterloo) will not be eligible to receive the Bachelor’s of Medical Sciences degree.

Important Medical Science policies
- Courses must be taken on campus/in-person
- Students must complete all required courses each term. Course withdrawals (WD or WF grades) will lead to a May Not Proceed standing.
- Incomplete courses (INC grades) must be resolved before students are permitted to progress to a future term. Failure to complete courses in a term, prior to the final enrolment date into courses for the future term, will result in a May Not Proceed standing.
- Students may submit a petition in accordance with Policy 70 (Student Petitions and Grievances) during their 1A to 2B academic terms at the University of Waterloo. If a petition is approved and results in a non-numeric grade being assigned in any one course, the student will be required to repeat the entire term.
- A May Not Proceed standing is assigned when a student fails to meet one or more of the progression requirements listed below. This standing must be cleared by repeating of courses, promotional requirements, or terms, as deemed appropriate, in order to permit enrolment into courses for the following term. Alternatively, students may choose to be consider for transfer to another program within or outside of the Faculty of Science.
- 1A to 2A terms:
- Overall minimum term average of 77.0%
- Minimum course grade of 60% in all classes
- 2B term:
- overall minimum term average of 77.0%
- minimum average of 77.0% across all 2A and 2B courses
- minimum average of 73.0% across all 2A and 2B Science* courses.
- Excludes MEDSCI 200, 202 and 203.
- Minimum course grade of 60% in all classes
- minimum grade of 60% on each component of the preclinical comprehensive sciences examination.
- 1A to 2A terms:
- Repeating courses:
- Courses with a grade below 60% (1A to 2B) must be repeated and can only be repeated once.
- When a passed course is repeated, both the original and repeated grades are recorded on the transcript, but only the higher grade will count for credit, be included in the term averages, and be used for progression decisions.
- Preclinical comprehensive sciences exam
- The preclinical comprehensive sciences examination, required for promotion from 2B to 3A, may be repeated if any one component of the examination does not achieve the minimum grade requirement.
- The preclinical comp exam can only be repeated once
Electives and Minors
- The BMSci program cannot be combined with any other major, minor, or option
- Students in this program do not have space for electives

Award and Financial Aid eligibility
- Eligibility while at Waterloo:
- all students at 90%+ are to receive the President’s Scholarship only
- All Science students including the MedSci students are eligible for a Science Entrance Scholarship valued at $1,000 for an admission average of 85% or greater, in addition to their automatic grid scholarship. If their admission average is between 80-84.9%, they will receive a Science Entrance Scholarship of $500 only.
