Waste Reduction Week 2016

Join us for a week of activities to reduce waste in the office, in the classroom, and at home. Follow the fun using the hashtag #UWWasteWeek

There are several fun activities for students, staff and faculty to get involved in this week! 

Sorting Challenge

  • Student Life Centre: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 11am-4pm 
  • School of Architecture: Friday October 28th, noon-4pm

Stop by the Sustainability Office's table to try and sort as many items as you can into garbage and recycling bins. You will have 30 seconds to complete this challenge and you will be entered into a prize draw for one of the following:

  • One of 4 Sustainability Kits (valued at approximately $50)
  • One of 3 $10 WatCard Top-ups (valued at $10)

Contest Terms: No purchase necessary, odds of winning will depend on number of participants. Participants will be asked to provide their email address for the sole purpose of contacting prize winners. Winners will be asked to complete a skill-testing question before claiming their prize. Contest closes at 4:30pm on October 28, 2016. This contest is only open to registered University of Waterloo students and employees, including Affiliated and Federated Institutions. Winners will be selected on November 2, 2016.

UW Waste Week Quiz

The UW Waste Week Quiz will open at 9am on Monday October 17 and close at 4:30pm on Friday October 21.

This quiz will test your recycling knowledge and give you a final score: 

0-3 – Recycling Rookie: Double-down on your recycling facts if you want to make it further!

4-7 – Recycling Recruit: Good job, you’ve mastered the basics, but there is still more to learn.

8-10 – Waste Wonk: Your waste reduction knowledge is nearly complete.

11-12 – Garbage Guru: You have deep insight into the ways of recycling and garbage reduction. Share your wisdom with others! 

Prizes include:

  • 3 Sustainability kits (valued at approximately $50)
  • 3 $10 WatCard top-ups (valued at $10)

Green Offices Challenge

The UW Green Offices will also be participating in Waste Week. Their schedule for the week is:

  • Muggy Monday (the 17th) – Bring a mug or travel mug to work and save 10 cents on coffee!
  • Tupperware Tuesday (the 18th) – Pack your own lunch in reusable containers to reduce disposable packaging
  • Water Bottle Wednesday (the 19th) – Refill your reusable water bottle at one of the refill stations across campus in order to reduce plastic waste
  • Throwback Thursday (the 20th) – Take a picture of any items thrown in the wrong bin and post your pictures on Twitter
  • Friday Finals (the 21st) – You will be emailed a link to a quiz - complete it to test your recycling knowledge

Complete the sign-up in your office to be entered into the prize draw. The Green Office with the highest participation in the challenge will get bragging rights! Good luck to our Green Offices!

Battery Campaign for Residences

Drop off your batteries at the new battery depots UWP, V1, and CLV Front Desks and help keep batteries out of landfill.

Plus, you can join a prize draw for one of the following by filling out a ballot at the Front Desk when you drop off your batteries:

  • One solar battery charger (valued at approximately $70)
  • 10 WatCard top-ups of $10 (valued at $10)
