Sustainability Action Fund announces spring 2022 recipients
The President's Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability (PACES) is excited to provide funding for three new campus sustainability projects inspiring 2022 through the Sustainability Action Fund (SAF). Launched in 2022, the SAF supports projects and initiatives that advance sustainability at Waterloo by connecting to our academic mission, improving operational practices, and/or fostering a culture of sustainability through campus engagement.
Spring 2022 projects:

Campus Housing Waste Diversion
This project will build off historical efforts to encourage waste diversion in move-out and move-in programming, pulling together supplies, small appliances, dishware, and other household items during move-out that can be given away for free to incoming students. This project is led by Campus Housing.

Capstone Design Sustainability Award
Nanotechnology Engineering and Chemical Engineering have undertaken curriculum mapping, revealing a paucity of course content explicitly linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This project will fund a Capstone Design Sustainable Development Award presented to the Fourth-Year Design Project group from each program having the best technical solution to a problem addressing an identified SDG. The award will act as a motivator for students to fuse all sustainable development content covered in courses. This project is being led by Nanotechnology and Chemical Engineering.

North Campus Garden Supports
This project will support the replacement of a shed and additional tools for community gardens that are located on North Campus near the Columbia Lake greenhouse. The gardens support a wide range of student, employee, and broader community gardeners to grow food on campus. This project is led by a student in the Faculty of Health.
Since 2017, the SAF has distributed over $550,000 in funding to more than 35 projects across campus. To learn more about the funding criteria, application details, and upcoming funding rounds, please visit the Sustainability Action Fund webpage.
