Abstract

Landfills are nearing capacity at alarming rates. The amount of solid waste being sent to landfill sites has become excessive and increasingly difficult to handle. As a result, alternatives to landfilling such as recycling, composting and reusing are becoming more and more recognized. The University of Waterloo has demonstrated its concern for environmental issues by launching the Watgreen program. The University’s Watgreen initiative encourages staff and students to address environmental issues facing the University by using the campus as a laboratory. Its goal is to try to convert the campus into a sustainable ecosystem by improving the University’s relationship with the environment. The University of Waterloo does promote recycling on campus, however true recycling only occurs once these items are reprocessed, and reintroduced into the market place.
