Abstract

WATgreen is an organization consisting of faculty, staff and students aiming towards the resolution of environmental issues facing the university. It has been expanding its scope towards the improvement of the operational efficiency of the university. WATgreen has taken the initiative to determine the most effective way to eliminate the use of pesticides on campus. This elimination requires changes in the current turn management policy to ensure that the campus remains weed-free. Under WATgreen’s direction, this 3B Systems Design group, WATgreen – GIS, examines the turf management problem and the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS). Subsequently, aspects of the turn management problem are implemented in a GIS. The nature of the turf management problem requires the WATgreen – GIS group to establish the framework by which the problem should be solved. General turf management practices and the factors that influence turf management are applied to the unique characteristics of the university. The more important properties of turf management are selected and implemented. As the accuracy of the data implemented is essential to provide an accurate analysis, the WATgreen – GIS group constructed a grasslands layer and the associated soil type and land usage patterns. On the basis of this data, analysis can be made as to the current state of the university’s turn. However, there are other factors that influence turf management that are not implemented in this model and could potentially be implemented in future workshops. The results of this workshop indicate that the GIS can be enhanced to provide a batter analytical tool for the university’s turf management problem and could also be used to analyze other aspects of the university’s operations and grounds.
