Abstract

A recent waste audit of the campus performed by graduate student Brad Wright showed large amounts of recyclables making their way into garbage bins instead of recycling containers. In order to decrease the amount of waste the university sends to landfills, my focus was to increase participation in campus recycling programs. Steps taken include performing a visual audit of waste containers across campus; surveying people throwing recyclables into waste containers; analyzing solid waste audit data; summarizing articles regarding motivation and participation in recycling programs; developing and placing recycling instructions and reminders; placing additional recycling containers in four buildings; and creating the First Annual Waste Reduction and Recycling Awards… For full text, please e-mail sustainability@uwaterloo.ca
