Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the idea of sustainability using a life cycle analysis approach. It was decided through consultation with Steve Cook, manager of the Purchasing Department for the University of Waterloo, that there was a need to conduct a life cycle analysis on the toner used in photocopying and toner cartridges used in laser printers at the university. Using the life cycle analysis of these two products as an example, we have made suggestions regarding the application of a universal environmental practice to be used by the purchasing Department to easily “grade” suppliers on the overall sustainability of their product/service.
