Abstract

This report was undertaken as a result of growing environmental awareness surrounding the issue of waste management and mounting pressures faced by the University of Waterloo to divert at least 60% of its waste by 2008. A food waste audit was completed at Ron Eydt Village (V2) Residence Cafeteria between March 7 and March 11, 2005 that aimed to determine the feasibility of organic waste diversion from campus residences. The waste audit simulated a pilot diversion program for student food wastes only. Using a clearly marked “Food Waste Only” bin, the study collected quantitative and qualitative data on the amount of organic waste generated by students in the cafeteria eating area.
