Abstract

The goal of our project is to evaluate the potential for expanding the recycling of residential plastics in the Region of Waterloo. Our three objectives are to assess the present sustainability of residential plastics use in the Region of Waterloo; to recommend ways in which residential plastics use in the region of Waterloo can be made more sustainable; and to identify barriers and opportunities to achieving a more sustainable residential use of plastics. Our first objective was addressed through a literature search to obtain a useful definition of sustainability and information about waste management and plastics use nationally and locally. Our second and third objectives were addressed through three case studies of the recycling programs in the Region of Waterloo, the Region of Niagara, and the city of Guelph.
