The rationale for choosing to perform a waste audit of the ES Coffee Shop was based on the assumption that the general population holds an opinion that Environmental Studies (ES) students are ‘greener’ and live more sustainably. At the same time, ES students often consider themselves and their friends to be environmentally conscious. As a result, it is often assumed that environmental studies students excel in terms of sustainability. However, without quantitative proof, this is just another stereotype. Environmental studies students, staff, and faculty frequently use the ES Coffee Shop. As a result, an assessment of the waste stream is essential in order to determine whether or not the faculty of Environmental Studies “practices what they preach”...
