Join the Sustainability Office for Zero Waste Week to reduce your material footprint and support our campus goal of becoming a zero waste campus by 2035. To support this transition, Waterloo has developed a Zero Waste UW Action Plan with initiatives in 5 key areas.
We're encouraging you to take the Zero Waste Challenge for the week, and have a number of events and activities to support you! Read more about the challenge and supporting activities below:

Are you ready for the challenge? The rules are simple:
-
- Collect your waste on campus in a 500mL mason jar (or similar-sized container) for one week
- Recycling and composting do not count - use the bins across campus!
- Complete the follow-up survey sent to your email by Friday, October 26 at 11:59pm
- BONUS: Share your progress on social media using #ZeroWasteUW and help inspire others
By completing the steps above, you will be entered to win one of these great prizes:
- 1 grand prize pack (~$100 value): includes a set of reusable cutlery, reusable produce bags, collapsable tupperware, a reusable water bottle, straw from KarsNaturalKreations and the book Zero Waste Home!
- 1 of 5 smaller prize packs (~$40 value): includes reusable cutlery and collapsable tupperware OR reusable produce bags and a reusable snack bag OR binder, clipboard, eco-friendly pencils, water bottle and a reusable straw donated from UW Retail Services
- Prize pack donated by Zero Waste Bulk (~$55 value): includes a bamboo toothbrush, stainless steel straw, reusable bamboo cutlery and an adorable canvas tote!
- 1 of 3 $10 gift certificates to Zero Waste Bulk through their kind donation!
- 1 of 10 $10 WatCard top-ups!
AND BEST OF ALL, they come in an adorable tote made from 100% recycled materials - so you can bring your lunch AND rep UW Sustainability!
We encourage you to try to keep your jar as empty as possible for the week. More importantly, we hope you gain an awareness of how much and what kind of waste you produce in a week so you can start thinking about more sustainable changes.
