Getting to and from campus

An important part of fulfilling Waterloo’s commitment to engage in more sustainable practices is to determine the most responsible way to manage the daily movement of tens of thousands of people to our campuses. Approximately 35 000 people come to campus every day, with about 86 percent (that’s over 30,000 people!) arriving by sustainable modes.

We are committed to providing programs, services, and resources to help you integrate active and sustainable travel into your daily travel to and from campus. This includes the following:

  • Working with campus partners and stakeholders to develop Waterloo’s inaugural Sustainable Transportation Plan which focuses on four key areas: commuting, circulation and movement, fleet, and parking

  • Delivering the biennial Travel Survey for employees and students

  • A continued expansion of secure bike parking options, education, and programming on campus

  • Parking suspension for employees to temporarily place their permit on hold while maintaining a place in their current lot, so they can use sustainable travel modes in the summer

  • Provision of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles

As a member of TravelWise, University employees are eligible for a number of benefits including the Emergency Ride Home program. Employees who commute using a sustainable mode of transportation are eligible for the Emergency Ride Home program through the Region of Waterloo’s TravelWise program. If you have an unforeseen emergency on any day you commute sustainably to work, you can request reimbursement of up to $75 per trip for your transportation costs, to a maximum of four trips per calendar year.

We are dedicated to improving supports to make walking, cycling, carpooling, and transit more effective and convenient. If you have questions about our sustainable efforts, please email Sustainable Transportation
