Distance Education

You may register for a Distance Ed course during a regular academic term and count it as a term requirement (one of your five). You can register during your scheduled on line appointment or when open enrollment begins provided an override is not needed. If an override is needed you should follow the usual procedure.

To take a Distance Ed course during your work term you must complete a course override form. If there are overrides on the course then you should get these approved by the instructor or Distance Ed. Submit the form to your Undergrad Secretary for department approval and processing. You must be finished at least 1B for this request to be considered.

At another University

Complete a Letter of Permission (LOP) Request form and submit it to the SYDE Undergrad office for faculty approval. It must be approved first before it can be processed by the Registrar's Office. See reverse of the form for additional Faculty of Engineering notes.

A course equivalent should be assigned by the instructor or Undergraduate Advisor in the appropriate UW department. Obtain the appropriate equivalent before you submit the form to the SYDE Undergrad Office for approval. Note: In order to approve a course as a UW equivalent you must provide a calendar description together with a detailed course outline that contains course content and assessment, that is, number of lecture/lab/tutorial hours per week, number of weeks and the textbook being used.

You can include your payment (cheque)/payment info (credit card) when submitting the form to the SYDE Undergrad Office for approval and if approved, your application can be sent to the Registrar's Office for processing.

The Letter of Permission must be processed by the UW Registrar's Office and sent to the host university before you can register for the course. The Registrar's Office will forward the Letter of Permission to the host University and a copy will be sent to you.

You cannot receive credit for a course taken at another university if you did not register for it via a Letter of Permission.

Note: It is "the student's responsibility to ensure that the official transcript from the host university is forwarded to UW" so that credit can be assigned.
