SYDE grad researcher awarded Alumni Gold Medal

Friday, September 20, 2024

Amy Tai, recent MASc graduate from Systems Design Engineering, was awarded the Alumni Gold Medal for the engineering faculty. This award recognizes her academic achievements and places her as one of Waterloo’s most accomplished graduates.

Throughout her degree, Amy focused on the exploration and design of deep neural network architectures for computer-assisted breast cancer clinical decision support tasks using synthetic correlated diffusion imaging.

Creating a novel volumetric convolutional neural network architecture, Amy’s finding led to learning volumetric deep radiomic features to characterize tissue characteristics. She then established a predictive model based on the learned deep radiomic features for accurately predicting pathologic complete response in breast cancer patients. This resulted in a novel predictive model based on the learned deep radiomic features for accurate Scarff-Bloom-Richardson grading of tumors.

Amy’s scientific contributions are recognized by 25 scientific articles, 17 poster presentations, 5 presentations at conference workshops and considerable worldwide media coverage. Congratulations Amy on this well-deserved recognition. We look forward to seeing her career continue to grow!
