SYDE PhD student awarded Governor General’s Gold Medal for 2026
Congratulations to Dr. Jing Du (Systems Design PhD, supervised by John Zelek) who is one of three exceptional graduates from the University of Waterloo who will be awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal at Spring 2026 Convocation. Recipients of this prestigious award are selected based on their outstanding academic achievements, as well as their world-class and impactful research.
Du's work introduces land cover discovery mapping, which enables 3D mapping systems to discover and segment unfamiliar objects while still identifying familiar objects. Her work and research serve to advance urban mapping and scene understanding from large-scale LiDAR and multi-source geospatial data. Du's achievements reflect her commitment to research excellence, innovation, and scholarly contributions that advance knowledge in her field.
