SYDE Graduate Symposium 2022

Systems Design Engineering (SYDE) graduate students came together for the 2022 Graduate Symposium on June 23. The Symposium featured 21 graduate students presenting their research in four topic areas: Image & Signal Analysis, Biomedical Engineering, Human Factors, and Systems Modelling & Simulations. The event also featured a keynote presentation by SYDE graduate alumni Deitra Sawh, Manager, Risk Control Operations, Ontario Financing Authority and Robert Bowerman, Chief Technical Officer, Kognitiv Corporation.

In honour of International Women in Engineering Day, we asked Sylivia Ng, Systems Design Engineering alumnus, a few questions about her journey as a woman in Engineering. She shares her story to highlight the importance of gender equity in Engineering. Women belong everywhere.

Convocation is a special time to celebrate a significant milestone. For the first time in two years, the University of Waterloo invites the graduating class to celebrate their accomplishments in front of families and friends during the in-person celebrations throughout the week.

The Systems Design Engineering (SYDE) class valedictorian was selected by their peers, in recognition of their social and academic contributions to the Waterloo community, to represent the graduating class at the SYDE convocation ceremony.

Introduction

Hi all! My name is Naomi Paul and I have just begun my MASc in Systems Design Engineering (SYDE), focusing on Human Factors and Ergonomics!

Cosmin Munteanu, a leading multidisciplinary researcher in human-computer interaction, has been appointed the new Schlegel Research Chair in Technology for Healthy Aging. Their research works at the intersection of aging and technology, focusing on facilitating meaningful and safe interactions between older adults and digital media devices.

AI models can help reduce the burden and cost of healthcare.

New artificial intelligence (AI) models can help doctors prioritize care by predicting which COVID-19 patients are most at risk of dying or developing kidney injuries during hospitalization.

The sophisticated computer software, developed by researchers at the University of Waterloo, identifies vulnerable patients by learning from previous COVID-19 patient cases with known clinical outcomes.

Early research into the growing electronic sports (esports) industry highlights a need for better coaching to prevent burnout among professional players.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo, identified several areas, including player fatigue, mental stress and peak performance conditions, that require in-depth research to improve coaching and player performance.
