SYDE Honours Four Retirees

The Department of Systems Design Engineering (SYDE) gathered on October 5, 2022 to recognize and honour the careers of four faculty and staff members.

Colleagues from the department shared professional accomplishments and memories before presenting the retirees with a custom charcuterie board and gift basket.

A team of first-year Waterloo Engineering students topped more than 800 other entries from around the world in a Google competition to develop solutions to help end poverty, ensure prosperity and protect the planet.

Aditi Sandhu, Het Patel, Jinal Rajawat and Mehak Dhaliwal, classmates in the systems design engineering (SYDE) program, won $3,000 each – plus mentorship opportunities and other prizes – as one of three winning teams in the Google Developers 2022 Solution Challenge.

Modelling Disaster Recovery

After a disaster strikes, the ability of individuals to recover is shaped by the many inter-connected systems that make up a community.

Waterloo research team partners with Grand River Hospital to perform virtual triaging of spine disorders using AI

Back pain is one of the most common reasons to visit the doctor. In cases of acute pain, disorders, or injury, a healthcare provider will request X-ray images of the spine and pelvis to help make a diagnosis. The images are annotated by hand, where the position and angle of key bony landmarks are measured to indicate if there is a misalignment that requires further treatment or surgery.

A student who has already demonstrated a keen interest in innovation will start her studies at Waterloo Engineering with backing from a prestigious scholarship.

Gurnirmal Kaur is one of four winners of James Hillier Foundation scholarships, which provide $20,000 over four years to students from Brantford and Brant County who are entering university in science-related fields.
