- Apply for the J. Alan George Student Leadership Award.
The J. Alan George Student Leadership Award is awarded to a graduate student who demonstrates outstanding leadership. Eligible students must be registered full time in the first year of their doctoral program at the University of Waterloo and must have received the Provost's Distinguished Inclusivity Doctoral Entrance Award (PD IDEA). Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs will select a recipient annually.

The value and number of awards vary from year to year.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
- Graduate students registered full time within their first year of doctoral studies at the University of Waterloo.
- Students must be within three terms of first receiving the Provost’s Distinguished Inclusivity Doctoral Entrance Award (PD IDEA) or its predecessor, the Provost Doctoral Entrance Award for Women (PDEAW).
- Students must demonstrate outstanding leadership.
Application/Deadline
Applications and required supporting documentation (as outlined on the form) must be submitted to the department for ranking purposes by October 15 before being forwarded to the faculty and then to Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA).
Department/Faculty Ranking
The department/faculty will take the following criteria into consideration and will forward their top candidates to GSPA:
- contribution and research potential of the applicant
- academic excellence as portrayed in the transcripts
- extracurricular activities and student leadership
University Ranking/Awarding
GSPA will review and rank the applications submitted, make the final selection and communicate with the applicants by the end of November.
