Awards and financial aid opportunities for graduate students at the University of Waterloo are advertised, adjudicated and administered by Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs, in collaboration with faculties, departments and the Student Awards and Financial Aid department. Awards 

Graduate awards at the University of Waterloo are funded through various sources, including the institutional operating budget, external agency funding, and donations from generous donors. Financial need funding 

Waterloo offers some assistance for graduate students who demonstrate financial need, but funding for these programs is limited. There are also opportunities available from external agencies. For more information, visit the links below:

Teaching Assistantships (TA) and Research Assistantships (RA)

Graduate Teaching Assistantship (TA) positions are held by a qualified student to assist a faculty member with instructional responsibilities. TA positions are arranged by your academic department and paid through Human Resources. 

Graduate Research Assistantship (RA) positions are held by a qualified student who performs a designated list of research duties under the supervision of one or more faculty members.

Work programs

  • The Work Placement program funds full-time on-campus jobs for full-time students. Both co-op and non-co-op students can apply.
  • The Work-Study program offers part-time on-campus jobs for full-time students.
