WiCS Orientation

WiCS Orientation is a welcome event for first-year students to learn how to improve their university experience, learn how to help themselves advance in their careers, and to cultivate a network of friends and allies — people to study with and play with; who can provide advice in good times and in bad; who can refer them to opportunities or to their connections.

As woman+, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people in tech, it is especially important to have a network of technical peers whose experiences are like one’s own, who have similar interests and goals, and with whom one can vent frustrations and celebrate successes.

This year, Orientation will be on September 9th, 2023!

When – Saturday Sept. 9th 2:30-6:30

SVPRO Consent Awareness Week

In collaboration with post-secondary campuses across Canada, the 2nd Annual Consent Awareness Week runs this year from September 18 - 22. You can check out everything happening at UW here

This week is an opportunity for our community to engage in conversations, activities, and events focused on consent, boundaries and building consent culture. While this is work we do throughout the year, dedicating a specific week to consent awareness enables us to intentionally normalize dialogue about consent, enhance nuanced understandings of how to practice it, deepen understandings of how to create healthy relationships with each other, embed consent in our daily practices and highlight the support services available to all campus members. Or in other words; to enhance our work of collectively building a Consent Culture. Join us for:

WiCS Study Room

The WiCS Study Room (DC 3150) is a place where WiCS students know they can meet and study with other WiCS students, making it easier for them to find like-minded peers and role models. As a secondary benefit, the room also serves as a space where WiCS students can take a short break from being in the minority.

To get the fob to the study room, you must fill out a request form for the access fob. The WiCS Event Coordinator will send you an email once it is ready for you to pick up!

Learn more about the WiCS Study Room on our website!

WiCS Innovation Fund

The WiCS Innovation Fund supports student-initiated activities such as hackathons, workshops, conferences, and much more, that support women and non-binary students in computing. WiCS will give out two awards worth $500 this fall, and another two in the winter!

If you’re interested, send an email to wics@uwaterloo.ca with an explanation of the use (e.g., organizing an event, attending a conference or hackathon) and what you will get out of attending. The Fund will sponsor future events only (not past events).
