GHD-04: Nature Based Solutions

Brief description of the organization

GHD is a global professional services firm specializing in engineering, technology integration, and sustainable urban solutions.

Problem area

Voluntary application of individual actions to mitigate biodiversity loss will not be sufficient to address the environmental and social effects of the combined global climate and biodiversity crises. Following the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) in December 2022, the federal government has prepared a national vision for improving the trajectory of biodiversity in Canada, titled the 2030 Nature Strategy. Brought to the House of Commons under Bill C-73: the Nature Accountability Act, the strategy was stalled from advancing to a second reading following the January 2025 prorogation of government.

Main objectives

If the government chooses to adopt this strategy, how can nature-based solutions be employed on private land development projects to comply with the biodiversity targets? How would this differ on public versus indigenous/unceded lands?

Select one of the 3 thematic categories (Reducing threats to biodiversity, Meeting People’s needs through sustainable use and benefit sharing, or Tools and solutions for implementing and mainstreaming) and prepare an analysis of how nature-based solutions can advance Canada’s biodiversity outcomes under the theme.
