MMD-01: Addressing Infiltration and Inflow (I/I) in Communal Sewer Collection & Septic System

Brief description of the organization

The Municipality of McDougall benefits significantly from its location along the shores of Georgian Bay and numerous inland lakes. Located just two hours north of Toronto via Highway 400, McDougall is home to 2,702 permanent residents, with a population that more than doubles seasonally. McDougall is a year-round destination offering many recreational activities and opportunities for residents and visitors.

Problem area

Inflow and Infiltration (I/I) in the wastewater collection system consisting of approximately 30 homes.

Main objectives

To locate the main sources of I/I in the system, explore options to address and prioritize these issues with a budget-mindful approach, and develop creative alternative methods for homeowners to manage surface runoff on their property to minimize impacts on the collection system. These goals will collaboratively work to reduce the load on the communal septic bed therefore extending its useful life and reducing the long-term cost for users.

Scope of work

  • Assess flow and condition assessment data, CCTV footage, historical records, and infrastructure drawings.
  • Analyze repair options and prioritize work according to severity and availability of funds.
  • Explore programs or methods in-place at other municipalities to encourage homeowners to mitigate property surface run-off.
  • Develop a mitigation strategy utilizing these methods.

Deliverables

  • Report for I/I reduction/repairs recommendation and strategy
  • Flyer/handout (also in digital format) for tips on how homeowners can mitigate surface run-off.

Team meeting frequency

Bi-Weekly
