Problem area
Develop a plan for Canada to incorporate greater use of natural gas for peak load shaving and cold-weather redundancy. Assess whether net-zero targets are realistic considering grid limitations on the coldest days.
While it's all well and good to beat the drum on decarbonization, on our coldest days there's no way that the grid can handle demand if all buildings were electrified. And while we seem to have several spark up natural gas plants around the GTA intended to supplement baseload for air-conditioners on the hottest days of summer, we understand It's extremely inefficient to centrally burn natural gas the power heat pumps on the coldest days of winter. In those situations, perhaps sparking up a natural gas furnace in a building or home makes a lot more sense. It also provide some redundancy. Develop a plan for Canada for greater use of natural gas for peak load shaving and cold-weather redundancy and assess whether net zero targets are truly realist in this sense.
