REAL-04: Building Code Updates for Sustainability and Decarbonization

Problem area

Investigate how sustainability, decarbonization, and lower thermal demand can be better integrated into Canada’s national building codes. Assess whether a separate code for manufactured homes is needed.

The building codes in Canada (the model national energy code for buildings, and the model national building code) have typically been updated on a five-year renewal cycle. This often means that new innovations and new imperatives are slow to diffuse in Canada, and particularly with a system that was originally based on structural integrity and fire suppression and avoidance. How can new imperatives around sustainability, decarbonization, lower thermal demand, and low embedded carbon be embedded in our national building codes, and is there a way to accelerate the renewal cycle of those codes? Do we need a separate and new building code for manufactured homes?
