ABSTRACT: Process analytics play a key role in achieving the process control strategy objectives in manufacturing processes. It has the potential to enhance continued process verification and applications in real-time process monitoring and control. Process analytical methods including, near-infrared (NIR), fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy as well as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), are often used in the characterization of raw materials, in-process/intermediate and final product quality attributes of manufacturing processes.
These techniques generate a large amount of data that require sophisticated data management and analysis techniques. Multivariate analysis techniques are increasingly used in industry for this purpose.
This presentation will focus on how multivariate analytical techniques can be used for developing spectroscopy- and HPLC-based soft sensor techniques for industrial applications. Some applications of these techniques for process monitoring, diagnostics and control will be demonstrated. The concept of mechanistic and multivariate latent structure (MMLS) hybrid model systems will also be introduced to demonstrate its applications in process modeling and optimization. Future research directions that focus on (i) taking these spectroscopic analytical methods from the lab to field and manufacturing shop floor for real-time process monitoring and (ii) the utilization of MMLS hybrid modeling methodology in process modeling and control will be presented.

Dr. Ramila Peiris received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He is an expert in using multivariate data analysis and spectroscopic methods for developing process monitoring and optimization techniques for process engineering applications. His research interests include mathematical modeling, process analytical technology and the control and optimization of unit operations in chemical, bioprocess and water treatment applications. He has authored several refereed journal publications and achieved numerous research and teaching related accomplishments including the Park Reilly Chemical Engineering Medal for Proficiency in Research, Sanofi Global Innovation Gold Award and the Certificate in University Teaching (CUT) Award. Ramila currently works as the Manager of Process Modeling and Process Analytical Technology at Sanofi Pasteur, one of the largest biopharmaceutical manufacturing organizations in the world. He also serves as an Associate Research Review Officer at Mitacs Inc.
