Course Requirements by CHE program
All graduate candidates must successfully complete a minimum number of courses. The specific course requirements by program are listed on the GSPA Academic Calendar.
Courses
Graduate students may choose from courses within the 500, 600 and 700 series.
Consult your degree requirements when choosing courses.
500-series courses
Courses with numbers within the 500 series are undergraduate courses, and they are posted in the Schedule of Classes for Undergraduate Students.
The 500-series courses provide
- technical electives for undergraduate students who want to specialize in a particular area, and
- background information for graduate students who lack specific knowledge.
600- and 700-series courses
Chemical Engineering's 600- and 700-series course offerings are subject to change and remain unconfirmed until they are posted in Schedule of Classes for Graduate Students. Normally, each 600- and 700-series course includes three hours of lectures per week for one term.
Reading Courses
Some 700-level courses are reading courses, in which students in research-based programs learn through independent study under the supervision of an instructor. Up to five students may be enrolled in each reading course. To be eligible to take a reading course, you must have taken at least one graduate course towards your degree and have a minimum grade of 80% in the degree you are pursuing.

Course Enrolment
There are several methods of registering for graduate courses in Chemical Engineering depending on the level of the course and whether the student is taking the course towards their degree, or as an extra or audit.
Chemical Engineering students can register for most 600/700 level courses on Quest unless the course requires Instructor consent. If consent is required, please see the Manager, Graduate Studies Chemical Engineering for a permission number.
Please request a permission number from the Manager, Graduate Studies Chemical Engineering to register for 500-level courses
For courses that you wish to take as ‘extra to degree’ or ‘audit’, please use a course drop add form. The instructor's signature is required, as well as your supervisor’s signature if you have one. For research students, please send to Manager, Graduate Studies, Chemical Engineering and for MEng students, please send to Graduate Student Advisor and Research Appointment Coordinator
