X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a useful technique for studying electronic and structural properties of materials. When these measurements are performed in-situ, it is valuable to identify the reactive species and monitor the reaction kinetics. This could significantly improve our understanding of material property and advance the rational design of material with improved performance.

Please join the Department of Chemical Engineering on Monday, May 6, for a seminar by Dr. Barbara Chan, a  professor from the University of Hong Kong’s Biomedical Engineering Programme. She will speak about her research team's multiphoton-based 3D microprinting technology's capability to fabricate complex protein microstructures and micropatterns.

Abstract: The world is faced with energy challenges with depleting fossil fuel reserves. Although with successful exploitation of shale gas and shale oil, the long-term economic benefits on shale fuels use considering the environmental damage are unknown. Biomass is abundant worldwide and its derived energy is regarded renewable and cost-effective. Additionally, the use of bioenergy from biomass is claimed to be carbon neutral since the biomass has supreme capability to biofixation of CO2. However, the cost of biodiesel production from biomass is high.
