Congratulations to the Department of Chemical Engineering’s Kien Tran, who received a 2020-2021 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).
The Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program in 2008 to strengthen Canada's ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. Each Vanier Scholar receives $50,000 per year for three years during their doctoral studies.
The Vanier Scholarship is the most prestigious and highly competitive of the doctoral scholarships offered by the Federal government. Kien’s success reflects his high academic achievement and strong leadership skills.
For his PhD research, Kien is building a smart cloud-based battery management system (BMS). “I hope that over the next three years, my work will contribute to my research field and improve the performance and lifespan of lithium-ion battery systems,” said Kien. “I believe that advancements in energy storage systems will pave the way to a safer, cleaner and energy-efficient society."

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
