Chemical Engineering Professor Michael Fowler his students John Catton, Mohamad Farkhondeh and Manoj Mathew are working in the GAIA Battery Test Centre on various projects, including, new Battery Management Systems to incorporate battery life, battery degradation modelling and innovative battery thermal management systems.

The principal investigator is Dr. John McPhee, System Design NSERC/Toyota/Maplesoft Research Chair, with Chemical Engineering professors as co-investigators with specific interest in electrochemical power trains and vehicle emissions.  GAIA is a large-scale state-of-the art laboratory supporting 3 key research areas:

1. Hybrid and electric powertrain systems

2. Energy storage and vehicle2grid systems

3. Intelligent vehicle technologies
