January 27th is International Holocaust Day. Seventy-seven years ago, today the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp was liberated. More than a million people’s lives were taken at that camp alone.
Today we reflect on the cruelty of the Holocaust. Millions of people targetted on the basis of their religion, ethnicity, political beliefs and sexual orientation, including six million Jewish people, were killed by the Nazis. It’s important to mark this solemn occasion and remember the lives of all those murdered and honour them alongside their surviving family members.
In our modern global climate with the rise of extremism, geopolitical tensions, and reemerging intolerance and racism, it’s crucial that we look back to learn the lesson this savage period in history has taught us, so it can never be allowed to happen again.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
