Manh-Kien Tran is optimistic about the future and the promise of advances in energy storage systems to pave the way for a cleaner, more energy-efficient society.

As a doctoral student in chemical engineering at the University of Waterloo, he hopes to contribute to that future through research focused on cloud-based battery management, with an emphasis on lithium-ion batteries.

PhD student Manh-Kien Tran is pursuing research on cloud-based battery management.

“I've always called this era the renaissance of energy innovation,” said Tran, the holder of a prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

After coming to Waterloo for his undergraduate degree in large part because of the co-op education program in 2013, he stayed on for his grad studies to take advantage of everything else the University and the community also have to offer.

“I'm familiar with the city,” said Tran, whose instructors include Michael Fowler. “I'm familiar with the environment. I have a community and access to research, top-notch facilities and top-notch supervisors. You can't go wrong.”
