An interdisciplinary team of UW undergrads were awarded third place in the 2016 Minerva-CIAC Responsible Care Case Study Competition. The event was held at the 2016 CSChE Conference in Quebec City where student contestants T. Donnelly (3B ChE), D. Tu (3A ChE), A. Vasile (3A ChE), and W. Klanac (2A MME) demonstrated their understanding of process safety management in the presence of chemical engineering academia, industry leaders, and student competitors from across the country.
The competition took place on October 17 as part of the CSChE Process Safety Management program. The case study focused on the mining industry where teams were tasked to resolve issues involving a cyanide solution mixing process followed by leaching. The UW team applied chemical process design strategies and principles to generate three solutions that could rectify issues in the current process.
UW's Minerva-CIAC team was supervised by Dr. Ariel Chan and Prof. Michael Fowler with financial support from the ChE and MME departments.
