Why should I care about carbon circular production?
Wednesday, March 9, 2022
Since
the
Industrial
Revolution
and
the
increase
of
mass
production,
we
have
seen
a
continuous
increase
in
greenhouse
gas
emissions.
Climate
change,
environmental
pollution
and
the
depletion
of
resources
result
from
a
linear
economy
based
on
using
million-year-old
carbon
sources
for
products
that
are
often
used
for
just
a
few
minutes.
Ensuring
sustainable
consumption
and
production
patterns
is
one
of
the
17
Sustainable
Development
Goals
(SDGs)
adopted
by
the
United
Nations
in
2015.
Not
surprisingly,
chemical
engineers
are
at
the
forefront
of
efforts
to
increase
our
ability
to
recycle
composite
materials,
and
to
re-think
how
to
design
and
source
products
considering
their
entire
life
cycle.
This
is
precisely
how
Waterloo
alumna
Dr.
Barbara
Guettler
(MASc,
2009;
PhD
2012)
leverages
her
advanced
studies
in
polymer
biocomposites.
Everyone
is
welcome
to
join
Dr.
Guettler
on
Tuesday,
March
22nd,
as
she
explains
current
challenges
in
recycling
composite
materials
and
new
opportunities
in
creating
polymers
from
renewable
resources.
