Seminar Attendance Milestone


All full-time Chemical Engineering students are required to complete the Seminar Attendance Milestone as part of their degree requirements.

Eligible Seminars

To meet the Seminar Attendance Milestone, you may attend seminars presented by the

  • Department of Chemical Engineering,
  • pre-approved UWaterloo presenters (see list below), and
  • other UWaterloo presenters, with approval of the Department’s Associate Chair of Graduate Studies.

Chemical Engineering Seminars

Upcoming seminars hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering are

  • announced by e-mail to all Chemical Engineering graduate students and whenever possible a calendar reminder will be provided,
  • posted on the Events section of the Chemical Engineering website, and
  • displayed on the monitor above the elevators on the first floor of E6.

To receive credit for Chemical Engineering seminar attendance, you must do the followIn-Person

In-Person Seminar Protocol:

  1. Arrive in the seminar room at least five minutes before the start time.
  2. Attend the entire seminar.
  3. A seminar code will be provided approximately 10 minutes prior to the end of the series
  4. Students are required to sign into  https://chesp.uwaterloo.ca/sites/grads/SitePages/Home.aspx site using their Nexus credentials, (ie: jcaron\password), and then fill in the date, title, department and the online code in the online code field.  Then they can click submit.
    1. The form fills in their Nexus ID , first name and last name automatically.
    2. Ask them to choose Chem Eng Departmental Seminar for departmental seminars otherwise the best match from the picklist or other.

Online Seminar Protocol:

  1. Students are required to sign into https://chesp.uwaterloo.ca/sites/grads/SitePages/Home.aspx site using their Nexus credentials, (ie: jcaron\password), and then fill in the date, title, department and the online code in the online code field Then they can click submit.
    1. The form fills in their Nexus ID , first name and last name automatically.
    2. Ask them to choose Chem Eng Departmental Seminar for departmental seminars otherwise the best match from the picklist or other.

          2. The host will put the code up in the chat box of the seminar 15 minutes before the end of the seminar, so that students  can use it to register for their seminar

To receive credit for attending seminars from pre-approved presenters, you must do the following:

  1. Attend the entire seminar.
  2. Get the seminar organizer’s signature on your Seminar Attendance Certificate.
  3. Upload an electronic copy of your signed Seminar Attendance Certificate to the Department’s Chem Eng Graduate Student SharePoint Site.

Other UWaterloo Seminars

If you would like to attend a seminar from a group that is not listed above, you must get approval from the Department’s Associate Chair of Graduate Studies. To do so, please e-mail the seminar announcement, including the short bio of the seminar presenter, to the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies

If the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies approves the seminar for credit towards the Seminar Attendance Milestone, an e-mail will be sent to all graduate students to advise them of the opportunity.

To receive credit for attending seminars from approved presenters, you must do the following:

  1. Attend the entire seminar.
  2. Get the seminar organizer’s signature on your Seminar Attendance Certificate.
  3. Upload an electronic copy of your signed Seminar Attendance Certificate to the Department’s Chem Eng Graduate Student SharePoint Site.

Seminar Attendance Forms

You are responsible for uploading certificates for each of the non-Chemical Engineering seminars you attend to the Department’s Chem Eng Graduate Student SharePoint Site, where they will be tracked and applied towards your Seminar Attendance Milestone requirement. Failure to keep your record current may prevent you from completing this milestone requirement, which would also prevent you from graduating.

To gain credit for the non-Chemical Engineering seminars you have attended, you must do the following for each seminar:

  1. Bring a copy of the Seminar Attendance Certificate to the approved seminar.
  2. Have the Seminar Attendance Certificate signed by the seminar organizer.
  3. Scan your Seminar Attendance Certificate and save the file as a PDF.
  4. Navigate to the Grad Student Seminar Attendance form at https://chesp.uwaterloo.ca/sites/grads/Lists/SeminarAttendance/Item/newifs.aspx
  5. Use your Nexus ID and password to log in. (The Grad Student Seminar Attendance form will appear.)
  6. Complete the Grad Student Seminar Attendance form, including the date, title and host of the seminar.
  7. Upload the PDF of your signed Seminar Attendance Certificate.
  8. Click Submit.
  9. Confirm that the ‘Seminars Attended to Date’ list is correct and complete.
  10. Log out of the Chem Eng Graduate Student SharePoint Site.
