What's the Difference Between Chemistry and Chemical Engineering?

While both chemistry and chemical engineering center on transforming raw materials at the molecular level, they operate at fundamentally different scales and priorities:

  • Chemistry is a fundamental science focused on discovery. Chemists investigate chemical and biochemical reactions at the lab scale to analyze molecular behavior, discover new compounds, and understand how reactions occur.
  • Chemical Engineering is the industrial application of chemical and biochemical discoveries. Chemical engineers take laboratory reactions and design systems to produce those materials safely, efficiently, in an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective way on a large scale for the immediate benefit of society.
