Dear fellow members of the Chemistry Department, 

Two Chemistry graduate students received special awards today as part of the Faculty of Science's Convocation ceremonies.

Today, two prominent Waterloo scientists were among the 60 exceptional scientists selected to be Fellows and Foreign Members of the Royal Society, the United Kingdom’s national academy of sciences. 

Chemist Linda Nazar and Physicist Donna Strickland were both elected for their outstanding contributions to their field and scientific understanding.

Admitting up to 52 fellows and 10 foreign members out of about 700 candidates each year, the fellowship recognizes scientists who have made substantial contributions to their fields.

Nanotechnology engineering instructor Laura Deakin and pharmacist Nardine Nakhla have been awarded the Faculty of Science's 2020 Excellence in Science Teaching Award for their innovative and engaging teaching methods.

Growing up in India, Subha Kalyaanamoorthy followed her love of learning new scientific discoveries and emerging technologies, into the emerging field of bioinformatics. Her passion for bioinformatics research has ultimately led Kalyaanamoorthy to the University of Waterloo, as the newest faculty member in the Department of Chemistry.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo have found an environmentally friendly way to explore life in the depths of the ocean.

Using a new application of a sampling technique called solid phase microextraction (SPME), researchers collected samples from deep sea vent ecosystems to study the biological and ecological processes that occur there, without damaging the surrounding organisms.

Twenty-nine University of Waterloo researchers, including four science recipients, will receive $3.4 million from the provincial government to further research innovation in Ontario. 

Mike Harris, MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga, Amy Fee, MPP for Kitchener South-Hespeler, and Belinda Karahalios, MPP for Cambridge announced 29 Ontario Research Fund-Research Infrastructure (ORF-RI) awards in February.

Waterloo chemist Janusz Pawliszyn was awarded the 2019 Talanta Medal for his numerous contributions to analytical chemistry and for his pioneering work in solid phase microextraction (SPME).

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Anna Klinkova for winning a WIN–MESA+ Seed Funding Award for $75,000.

Chemistry Alumnus Adrien Côté (BSc Applied Chemistry ’99) was named Executive Director of Velocity this past week.
