This event will be held in HH 2034 or what is known as the project cube, and all are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there! Please find a description of the topic below.
The Popular Reception of Ancient Stoicism
I seem to regularly come across people who are attracted to ancient Stoicism, especially as presented in the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius.
-What do you make of the present interest in ancient Stoicism? What is the source of this interest?
-Is there something in particular about Marcus Aurelius that seems to make him a popular spokesman for Stoicism?
-Is the modern interest in Stoicism a “male” thing? Why has it become associated with the online “manosphere". Is there an element of toxic masculinity to it?
-What do you think of the following statement by the writer Jules Evans:“Stoicism is popular now because people feel out of control. . . . Stoicism says, accept that you cannot control the external world, but that you can find a measure of serenity and happiness and moral meaning by focusing on what is in your control, your own beliefs and your own actions.” (https://www.stoicinsights.com/philosopher-jules-evans-on-why-stoicism-has-become-so-popular-over-the-last-decade/)
-How is the modern interest in Stoicism connected to the recent observation that many people apparently have a kind of obsession with ancient Rome and think about it regularly?
