Desmond Conacher Scholarship

We are pleased to pass on the news that Jessica Higgins has been awarded the prestigious Desmond Conacher Scholarship. This scholarship is offered annually to a Canadian student intending to enter a graduate programme in Classical Studies, Ancient History, Ancient Philosophy, or Classical Archaeology at any Canadian university. The scholarship commemorates Desmond John Conacher, formerly Professor of Classics at the University of Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Honorary President of the Classical Association of Canada.

Through the generosity of the late Harry C. Maynard, for many years a teacher of Classics at the University of Toronto Schools, a program of scholarship assistance for students of Classics has been established by the Trustees of Mr. Maynard's estate.

We are also pleased to announce that Lesley Roswell was awarded the Harry C. Maynard Scholarship in Classical Studies.  This scholarship is awarded to a university undergraduate proceeding to a first degree in Classics (approximate value is $3000).

The Matthews collection

The Classical Studies department was very pleased recently to receive a substantial part of the extensive classical library of the late Professor Victor Matthews of the University of Guelph, through the kind donation of Mrs Irene Matthews. he Matthews collection, which is now housed in the lounge as a learning and research resource for our students, comprises over 1000 books and over 500 issues of classical journals.
