On April 1, the Consul-General of Greece, Mr. Victor Maligoudis, and Prof. Christos Michalakelis, CEO of Study in Greece, met with Prof. Ian Rowlands of Waterloo International, Matthew Coleman and Riemer Faber of the Department of Classics and of the Institute for Hellenistic Studies to talk about advancing student experience in Greece, courses abroad, and academic networking with colleagues in Greece.

Congratulations to Stavros Stavroulias! Stavros will be Valedictorian for the Faculty of Arts convocation this coming spring. This is a well deserved accolade for our Medieval Studies & Speech Communication double major. Stavros, as you all know, is involved in a myriad of clubs, activities, and studies. To name but a few roles Stavros has taken on: Consul of the Classical & Medieval Students Society, student representative on the Arts Endowment Fund, VP Academic representative for the Arts Student Union, pop up art show participant, and the list goes on.

Congratulations to our own Professor Sheila Ager! Sheila will become the Dean of Arts on July 2019. She has long carried out important service roles at the University of Waterloo. Among these roles are the following: Chair of Classical Studies, Interim Chair of Fine Arts, member of Senate, member of the Board of Governors, Associate Dean, Arts, and the Director of the Academic Leadership Program. And these are just highlights! In addition to being a superb administrator, she is recognized as one of our Department's strongest teachers and mentors.

The gathering began shortly after Sheila Ager's lecture, "Eve, Pandora, Cleopatra: Scapegoating women in Myth and History".  Following the lecture, the annual prizes for Classical Studies students were awarded.

Interested in seeing sites you’ve only heard about or dreamed of seeing? Join us as we explore the many places, stories, heroes, legends of Southern Italy and Sicily! This Spring Semester (2018) the Departments of Anthropology and Classical Studies will be conducting a study trip abroad to Italy with a focus on the sites and history of Southern Italy and Sicily (Magna Graecia).

University of Waterloo’s own Dr. David Porreca in collaboration with Dr. Frank Klaassen (University of Saskatchewan) are proud to present a new exhibit on the magical intersections between the medieval and modern worlds.

Classical Studies is delighted to share the news that Professor Ron Kroeker is one of the 2017 Arts Faculty’s Excellence in Teaching Award Winners! Ron has taught for us for ten years, across a wide array of classes, large and small, Greek and Latin, history, literature, and religion. His CLAS 104 is the largest single-section class on campus, and every year Ron introduces hundreds of students from across the University to the delights of classical mythology.
